CHAT Lab research sits at the intersection of cognitive psychology, human factors, human-computer interaction, and applied technology. Our central question is:
How can we design technologies that respect human cognition, reduce decision burden, and help people make informed choices?
Research areas
Stress, fatigue, and privacy decision-making
People encounter many privacy choices online, including cookie consent, location sharing, app permissions, and profile disclosure. This line of work studies how repeated decisions, stress, cognitive burden, and interface design affect users’ privacy decisions and privacy-protective behavior.
Age-inclusive digital privacy education
This work develops and evaluates education interventions that help younger and older adults understand online privacy risks and make informed choices. Projects compare different modalities that are used to deliver education content such as text, video, interactive tutorials, infographics, and chatbot.
Personalized privacy interfaces and applied machine learning
Can data-driven models help reduce the burden of configuring privacy settings while preserving user autonomy? This line of work explores user-center interface design for privacy settings.
Human factors and usability in applied technology
CHAT Lab is also interested in usability, safety, and user-centered design in applied contexts such as healthcare technology, decision support, and human-machine systems.
